Leaving Pets in Cars is a Dangerous Choice

I want to share an important message about the dangers of leaving pets in cars. This is an issue close to my heart, and I believe we all need to be more aware of it, especially during the warmer months.

Leaving pets in a car is a dangerous choice, even for a short period, it can be extremely dangerous. On a warm day, the temperature inside a parked car can rise rapidly to levels that can be fatal to your furry friend. For example, on a 75-degree day, the temperature inside a car can soar to 94 degrees in just 10 minutes and reach a sweltering 109 degrees in 30 minutes. Pets can suffer from heatstroke in this environment, which can be fatal if not addressed immediately (American Veterinary Medical Association).

Heatstroke is a serious condition that can occur quickly and with little warning. It’s essential to recognize the signs so you can act fast if your pet is in danger. Common symptoms of heatstroke in pets include excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart rate, drooling, weakness or lethargy, confusion or dizziness, and vomiting or diarrhea. If you notice any of these signs, move your pet to a cooler area immediately and seek veterinary attention right away (ASPCA).

Pets are particularly susceptible to heatstroke because they can’t regulate their body temperature as efficiently as humans. Dogs, for example, primarily cool themselves by panting and sweating through their paw pads, which is not enough to cope with extreme heat. This makes them much more vulnerable to overheating (American Kennel Club).

So, what can you do if you need to run errands but have your pet with you? Here are a few safe alternatives: If possible, leave your pets at home in a cool, comfortable environment. Some stores allow pets inside, so check if your destination is pet-friendly before heading out. If you’re running errands with a friend or family member, have them stay with the pet in the car with the air conditioning running. And of course, consider hiring a pet sitter. This is where Loving Arms Pet Sitting can help! We provide safe, reliable care for your pets when you can’t be with them.

Many places have laws against leaving pets unattended in vehicles. In some areas, good Samaritans are legally allowed to break into cars to rescue pets in distress. Besides the legal implications, the potential harm to your pet should be reason enough to avoid this practice altogether (MSU).

As pet owners, it’s our responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of our furry friends. Leaving a pet in a car, even for a few minutes, is a risk that’s simply not worth taking. Always consider their safety and look for alternatives that keep them cool and comfortable.
